An empty cottage in an English wood
Mock-Tudor frames a casement, single-glazed
Terra cotta pots of standing roses
And a stone slab path leads, crazy-paved,
Through arrays of wild flowers
Lupins, shrubs, and a grassy patch
Of lawn that sits outwith a picket fence
Around a country cottage crowned in thatch
The picture’s mainly green, with that lush green
Suggestive of a good amount of rain.
Small fruit trees grow in tubs beside the house
The plasterwork is clean, and white, and plain,
Covering red brick, which we can spot
From the protruding chimney on the right-hand side
Off to the left, obscured by undergrowth,
A simple wooden bench is seen, unoccupied.
